Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

What should I do to get ready for my consultation?

Please have Zoom setup and ready to go, the Zoom website is HERE.  Phones or tablets can be great as it allows you to switch cameras to show the vet your pet more easily. Test video and audio settings prior to the consultation, use a headset for better audio quality if needed.

Remember to keep the doors and windows shut, also if possible have a helper with you. Any pictures and/or videos ready to share if necessary is also good.

How does the vet know what is wrong with my pet if they cannot see my pet in person?

It’s your pet’s medical history and symptoms that really matter the most in the first instance. The vet will see you and your pet clearly on a video screen and ask you some key questions to find out how they can best care for your pet.

If there's a problem with your internet connection the vet may need to complete the consultation over the phone.

How does it work if my MiVetConnect vet says my pet needs a physical examination?

Your MiVetConnect vet will provide you with advice based on urgency. It might be necessary that your pet has a physical exam straight away or our vets might liaise with your regular vet clinic to set up an appointment time in the clinic.

How much does a MiVetConnect Consultation cost?

The cost of a 15min consultation is $50 (NZD). With MiVetConnect you’re paying for convenient virtual care. No busy waiting rooms or traveling with your pet. When compared with urgent or after-hours services you may find that a MiVetConnect consultation is more affordable.

What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards, using the Stripe payment platform. We also allow bank transfers.

Instructions for both will be sent to you via email after the consultation.

Are MiVetConnect Vets based in NZ?

Yes, they are. All MiVetConnect Vets are based in New Zealand. Importantly, they’re experienced, and licensed veterinary practitioners, registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand. MiVetConnect is a New Zealand company and we're proud to support local vet clinics.

Is my regular vet clinic affiliated with MiVetConnect?

Anyone can make use of the virtual consultation service MiVetConnect offers.

To make sure we can help your pet, just make a booking on our website and tell us the name of your regular clinic. If they aren’t a partner of MiVetConnect yet, we’d love to have them on board and will be in touch with them as soon as possible

Who can book a consultation?

To book a video consultation, you will need to be 18 years of age or older, a resident of New Zealand, and the decision maker for the health and wellbeing of the pet you are presenting for the consultation.

Is a veterinary video consultation for my pet similar to a video consultation I have with a GP for myself?

Similar..but not quite the same! Just like in human medicine, our veterinarians are available online to answer questions, triage (evaluate the urgency of your concerns), and give health and wellness advice for your pet(s). Our online consultations make it easy to chat with a veterinarian on your phone or device via a video call. We pride ourselves on delivering expert advice, actionable treatment and peace of mind. We are here to help you make the right decision for your pet - whether you can manage at home, or need hands-on care - and advice as to the urgency of that - whether you can wait for your clinic to open, or need emergency treatment now. We partner with clinics who are able to provide hands-on care.

However, we do not have access to your pet’s health records and we are not allowed to prescribe medication

Do you prescribe medication if my pet needs it?

At this point in time, we can't prescribe medication. This helps ensure that a veterinarian is familiar enough with your pet’s current and past medical history to diagnose and treat any medical concerns. We do not have access to your pet’s health records.

MiVetConnect is your first port of call for your pet. We're your Veterinary advisory service, in many cases, your pet will be able to be treated and monitored at home without prescription medication. We will certainly advise if we think it is needed and requires a visit for your vet, which we can make arrangements for!

Even without the ability to prescribe, there are still many benefits to talking with an online vet.

Can a video consultation help me with my pet’s concerns?

Yes! Check out our homepage to find some of the many ways a video call with our friendly vets can help!
